How to Enhance Your Workouts

Posted by ZumbaContraCosta on August 5, 2016

I love this post written today by my Zumba Jammer Friend, Tennishia Vines.  Tennishia has been teaching Zumba for over 5 years and is the Assistant Group Fitness Manager at the Osher Family JCC.  I whole-heartedly agree with her ideas about enhancing your fitness workout.

The Secret to Energizing Your Zumba Workout

By Tennishia Vines, August 4, 2016

Teaching over 200 Zumba® participants per week, I have had every type of student: the professional dancer, the front row diva, the can’t-remember-the-moves-but-giving-it-my-all student, the high-impact guru, the leisurely dancer and more. But I’ve noticed there is one type of Zumba®  participant who gets the most out of every workout. No matter how good he or she is at dancing, regardless of age, gender, or any other factor, this type of student always has the best results.

In fact, I use this same technique when I teach.

Q: The biggest secret to having a great Zumba workout?

A: Having a free-spirited, positive attitude and always wearing your smile!

That’s right, be positive and show your grin. I have chosen to do this when I work out because it’s good for my health. I always tell my students, ‘You burn more calories if you smile!’ because you are more likely to do bigger moves. You should be having an emotional connection to the dance.

Here are five reasons why smiling is great for your daily routine.

  1. Smiling decreases stress. Studies have shown that it can reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
  2. It helps you recover faster. This was shown in an experiment with people who smiled after accomplishing a stressful task.
  3. It helps you perform better. Runners have noticed the benefits!
  4. It makes you more approachable. Way to make new friends in your Group Exercise class!
  5. And of course, it costs nothing.

Next time you find yourself in class trying to keep up with the moves, burn more calories or just make a new friend, remember to bring your positive, free-spirited attitude. I’d better see you smiling next time!

Why You Should Work Out with Weights

Posted by ZumbaContraCosta on March 30, 2016

Why You Should Work Out with Weights

Janice Litvin

What happens when you work out with weights?  Well, that depends.  If you go with very heavy weights & a lower number of repetitions, then you will build bulk, aka muscle hypertrophy.  However if you work with lighter weights & a higher number of repetitions, you get what we call muscle endurance.  Muscle endurance, by definition, is the ability of the muscle to perform repeated contractions, against a resistance, over an extended period of time.

Why is this important?

Because as we age, our bodies begin to change, especially in the areas of muscle mass, bone density, and metabolism.  But all is not lost, because you can change all of that?  Did you know that with strength training you can reverse the hands of time?

How, you ask?

According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), one of the unique qualities of the human body is its ability to change, if you challenge it.  Like muscle, bone is living tissue and when you challenge it, the bone becomes more dense and less brittle.

When you build muscle (or muscle endurance), you are increasing the muscle fibers, you are building bone density (to stave off osteoporosis, the loss of bone density), and most exciting of all, especially for you weight watchers, you are changing your metabolism because you are changing the proportion of muscle to fat.

What are some of the purposes of our bones?

Besides the obvious, to give us shape and allow us to move, the bones also serve several other important functions:  protect our vital organs, store calcium & phosphorus, produce red blood cells, and act as anchors for our muscles.

How to get started

One way I have found to get started is to find a strength training class through your city’s Park & Rec facilities, YMCA, or gym, if you belong to one.  Or, to keep it simple, just carry two cans of  food, as you take your walks.  Alternately you can purchase light weights (no more than 5 pounds, at first) and follow a youtube video in the privacy of your own home.

Another option is to work with a personal trainer for a few sessions until you get the hang of it.  I will be writing an entire blog post on how to choose a personal trainer soon, but suffice it to say that just like choosing any professional, not all personal trainers are created equally.  They should have a certification from one of the respected certifying bodies, such as ACSM, NASM, NSCA, AFAA, or ACE.  Also they should assess you and your injury history before one weight is lifted.

The American Heart Association recommends at least one or two weight-lifting sessions per week.  Remember to drink plenty of water, and eat protein within an hour after lifting weights.

Join me in changing your body with weight-lifting, and turn back the hands of time.  You will look better, feel younger and revitalize your body, one repetition at a time.

All Calories are Not Created Equally: There’s Sugar!

All Calories are Not Created Equally:  There’s Sugar

“All calories are not created equally.” So says Dr. Robert Lustig, pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, and lead investigator of a study released today in Obesity Magazine online. Sugar is the culprit.

Dr. Robert Lustig

Dr. Robert Lustig

In this study, Dr. Lustig and his team, which included Jean-Marc Schwarz, a professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Vallejo’s Touro University and senior author of the paper, worked with 43 children and teens on a nine-day diet that severely restricted sugar without reducing calories. The level of caloric intake was maintained so as to isolate the effect of sugar on metabolic function.

The result: restricting sugar, not calories, was found to improve the metabolic health of all of these youths. The kids improved in blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides (fat in the blood) & glucose levels.

“What this is saying is that sugar is toxic because it’s sugar; not because it’s calories,” said Dr. Robert Lustig, and lead author of the study. “This proves conclusively, beyond a shadow of doubt, that a calorie is not a calorie.”

Most Americans consume roughly 22 teaspoons of sugar daily, mostly from processed foods and sugary sodas.

Dr. Lustig is on a quest to get the FDA to remove sugar from the safe list of foods, known as the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) list. The first success was the recent addition of a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages by the City of Berkeley.

The full text of the results of this study appeared today on Obesity online and will appear in the print version in February.

Walking: U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action

Posted by ZumbaContraCosta on September 9, 2015

walking-web-bannerU. S. Surgeon General Launches Campaign with National Call to Action on Walking

September 9, 2015

Today, the United States Surgeon General issued a call to action to address major public health challenges such as heart disease and diabetes. Step It Up! The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities articulates the health benefits of walking.

“Walking is the simplest way to add more physical activity into our everyday lives,” said Lawrence E. Armstrong, Ph.D., FACSM, president of the American College of Sports Medicine. “Research demonstrates numerous health benefits of walking and healthy eating, and ACSM supports this call to action to create healthier, more active communities in the U.S.”

“We know that an active lifestyle is critical to achieving good overall health. And walking is a simple, effective and affordable way to build physical activity into our lives.

The Surgeon General’s report discusses the health benefits of walking and calls on individuals to make walking a priority in their lives. Fewer than half of all U.S. adults get enough physical activity to reduce their risk of chronic disease, and only a quarter of high school students get the recommended amount. Physical inactivity contributes to heart and lung disease, diabetes and cancer, which account for 86% of our nation’s health care costs. Building walking into daily life can reduce disease and save money.

“We know that an average of 22 minutes a day of physical activity – such as brisk walking – can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes,” added Dr. Murthy. “The key is to get started because even a small first effort can make a big difference in improving the personal health of an individual and the public health of the nation.”
