Latin Dance Fitness – Exercise in Disguise

FAQ

Below are answers to the most common questions about Zumba:

What is Zumba?

The name Zumba is derived from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun. Zumba brings Latin music (Salsa, Cha Cha, Tango, Samba, Merengue, Cumbia, Reggaeton, belly dance, hip hop & more) to aerobic dance exercise to create a fun-filled hour of fat-burning. The music is infectious and makes you feel like you are in a Latin nightclub; you can’t help but move to the beat and burn 300 – 800 calories at the same time.
Zumba® is a registered trademark of Zumba Fitness, LLC.

Do I need any dance experience?

No, Zumba combines fun Latin rhythms with basic fitness moves and simple dance steps to create a fun-filled interval training hour.

What shoes do I need?

Any gym shoe, aerobic shoe, or dance shoe/sneaker with very little tread work best for moving and turning.   Also they provide the cushion and medial lateral support needed for side-to-side movements.  Do not wear running shoes or cross-trainers because they are designed for forward motion and have too much tread, which grips the floor.   Any shoe which allows for twisting and turning is suitable.

Where can I find the right shoes?

My favorite vendor for dance shoes is Discount Dance Supply (www.discountdance.com) and my teacher id is: TP31728 This # will get you a bigger discount than the normal prices.  The shoes you want in general, have split and very thick soles.  Email me with any questions about particular shoes.

What clothing should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing or your favorite dance / exercise clothes.

How long is the class?

Usually 45 to 60 minutes.

Do you stretch?

Yes, I firmly believe that all fitness classes should include a stretch at the beginning and end of every class.

Age requirements?

Minimum age is about 14 to 16.  Next summer Zumba Kids, known as Zumbatomic will be coming to Contra Costa County.

Is Zumba only for women?

Absolutely not.  Anyone who can move, can dance Zumba.   Men & women are equally welcome.
